Kegel exercises – avoid health problems
Date Added: February 21, 2010 03:17:41 AM
Dr. Arnold Kegel was the first to develop a set of exercises to work out the pelvic floor muscles, particularly pubococcygeus muscles (PC muscles). The muscles are involved in urination, bowel movements, sexual intercourse and, in females, during labour. Age, surgery, childbirth, excessive weight gain and particular illnesses can cause weakening of the muscles, resulting in urinary and bowel incontinence. In males, weakening of the pelvic floor muscles can also cause premature ejaculation. In both males and females, the debilitated pelvic floor muscles can cause a decrease in sexual pleasure. Hence, Kegel exercises are suitable for various purposes. This type of exercise should be the "first line" of a management programme to handle stress or urinary and fecal incontinence. The pc muscles involved by this kind of exercises include the anal and urinary sphincter. In men, the exercise can "lift" the testicles. It may take a few weeks to notice a substantial difference, but some males notice their testicles lifting immediately. As well as any muscle of the body, the pelvic floor muscles, if not involved or "worked out" on a regular basis, debilitate and eventually atrophy. Post-menopausal females normally suffer from vaginal atrophy. In females, lack of muscle tone in the pelvic area can bring on vaginal or uterine prolapse, also known as fallen uterus. The conditions can be rather uncomfortable and sometimes require surgical treatment. But, the major cause is a collapse of the pelvic floor that keeps the inner organs in place. Kegel exercises can forestall the complications and can be helpful in treating them, too. To insure you know how to contract the pc muscles, try to stop the flow of urine while you are going to the washroom. If you manage to do this, you have got the basic movement. Or try another technique: having put a finger into the vagina, try to compress the muscles. You should be able to feel your vagina become tight and your pelvic floor move up. Afterwards stop contracting your muscles and feel your pelvic floor move down to the initial position. Kegel exercises are to be done on a regular basis to achieve the best results. A set of Kegel exercises for males and females can be found at kegel-exercise.org. Remember it is better to forestall a medical condition than to deal with it.
